Amber Alert issued for baby taken during car theft at Walmart store in SW Houston

HOUSTON

Houston police say Evan Montgomery Lamar Miller was in the back of the Jeep when it was stolen around 5:44pm from the parking lot of the Walmart store at 11200 S. Gessner.

Police say the baby's mom had left Evan and a 7-year-old daughter in the running car and ran inside the store to go to the ATM. That's when a black man dressed in all black tried to abduct the girl. The 7-year-old managed to get out of the car, and the suspect stole the Jeep and drove off on Gessner, heading toward Highway 59.

Police did not know whether the suspect was aware that Evan also was inside of the Jeep.

"We're hoping that maybe his intention wasn't to take the baby, and maybe he's got the smarts to drop him off at a fire station or somewhere, somewhere safe. That's what we're hoping for," Houston Police Department Detective Carlos Cardenas said.

Officers checked nearby neighborhoods and apartment complexes but could not find a sign of the child or the car. More than 50 police units and a helicopter are currently searching for the toddler.

The stolen vehicle is a green, 4-door, 1996 Jeep Cherokee, Texas license plate BP2N042. The car has a "Baby on Board" sticker on the back window.

Police say Evan was last seen wearing a blue knit cap, a white T-shirt, a gray sweatshirt, hunter green sweat pants with stripes and tan hiking boots.

Anyone with information regarding the child, suspect or vehicle is asked to immediately call the Houston Police Department at 713-308-3600.
