Suspect arrested in good Samaritan shooting

HOUSTON Authorities say Anthony Ray Ferrel was arrested shortly after midnight Sunday at a nightclub located at the 3300 block of Old Spanish Trail. HPD homicide investigators responded to a Crime Stoppers tip which led them to Ferrel. A witness to the murder along with surveillance video positively identified Ferrel as the suspect in the case.

The suspect now identified as Ferrel is accused of grabbing a woman purse at a Chevron gas station at Beechnut and the West Loop early Thursday morning then fatally shooting Samuel Irick when he tried to intervene and help the woman. Ferrel fled with the woman's purse.

The arrest comes just as family and friends say goodbye to Samuel Irick. The viewing was held on Sunday and his funeral will be held on Monday. His family told us he was always willing to help others and that he died doing just that.

Ferrel, 39, is charged with capital murder and is being held without bond.

We've also learned a little bit about Ferrel's criminal past - court records show that he has prior charges from a drug arrest, auto theft, robbery and burglary.
