Two alarm fire destroys downtown building

HOUSTON Thick black smoke filled the sky from the two alarm fire, not far from the George R. Brown Convention Center just off Highway 59 near I-45. The fire broke out at the vacant business just before 2:30pm and quickly went two alarms, as firefighters moved into defensive mode. The fire was contained after about 30 minutes.

Firefighters were concerned about a structure to the west, but it wasn't damaged. The wood structure gave off a lot of smoke that blew into downtown.

No injuries were reported.
