NYC's flagship Macy's store reopens after fire

NEW YORK Hundreds of shoppers were evacuated when a fire broke out in an escalator between the third and fourth floors. The store was shut down for about an hour.

One shopper says she smelled smoke as soon as she entered the store. She says about 15 minutes later, "Everything was like a white haze."

The fire happened as Manhattan stores looked to recover from the foot of snow that had fallen on the city only hours before.

A Macy's spokeswoman says she hopes those who were chased away by the snowstorm will make it in while workers are pulling all-nighters. The store will stay open around the clock from 7 a.m. tomorrow until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.
