One shopper says she smelled smoke as soon as she entered the store. She says about 15 minutes later, "Everything was like a white haze."
The fire happened as Manhattan stores looked to recover from the foot of snow that had fallen on the city only hours before.
A Macy's spokeswoman says she hopes those who were chased away by the snowstorm will make it in while workers are pulling all-nighters. The store will stay open around the clock from 7 a.m. tomorrow until 6 p.m. Christmas Eve.
