Pastor calls on community to help fight crime

HOUSTON From local churches to homeowners, victims say thieves have even stolen communion bread and wine. Last Friday, a homeowner shot and injured a 14-year-old boy suspected of breaking into his home.

This follows a crime meeting last week where neighborhoods near MacGregor met with local police. Leaders say they realize police cannot do it alone.

"The community has to watch each other's back. If someone sees somebody in your yard, somebody new in the community and you don't know anything about them, you just holler at them-- 'Can I help you?' Let them know that the house is being watched. We don't have enough of that," said Reverend James Nash with the Houston Ministers Against Crime.

Reverend Nash also said you can see the results of a community program in Sunnyside, working to turn abandoned properties into new homes.
