Juneteenth Parade marches downtown

HOUSTON The National Emancipation Association staged its 36th annual Juneteenth Parade. Older attendees were glad to see many children at the parade.

"That's great to see young people out here because then tradition is continued to be carried on as we pass our tradition orally down to our children, they will be able to pass it on from generation to generation," said parade watcher Dr. Terry Wiley.

The parade kicked off several Juneteenth activities. Juneteenth honors the announcement of the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June 19, 1865.
