Jose Alvarenga, 40, and his family were asleep in their home when he was awakened by a loud noise downstairs. Alvarenga went downstairs and found two suspects had kicked in the back door and were in the residence.

One suspect then ordered Alvarenga, at gunpoint, to the ground while the other suspect ran upstairs and ordered Alvarenga's daughters to lie on the ground next to their father. Both suspects then repeatedly demanded money from the family. When Alvarenga failed to produce any money, he was shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital.

Both suspects then fled the scene in an older model white van with a sliding door. One suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his late teens to early 20s, about 5'5" and with a skinny build. The second suspect is also a Hispanic male in his 20s, about 5'7" and with a chubby build. Both were dressed in black clothing.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
