On Monday, nearly 50 hauling trucks will be used to carry sand from East and Stewart Beaches to the seawall. They will begin replenishing the sand, stripped away from the seawall during Ike.
"This project is going to be about 300,000 cubic yards of sand and excess sand at both parks. We're trying to be proactive and get tourism started up again. So just be patient with us for three or four months," says Lou Muller, Executive Director of the Galveston Parks Board.
Galveston's seawall is getting a much-needed and long-awaited makeover. It's all part of a $6 million restoration aimed at rebuilding those beaches hardest hit by erosion from the storm, an area between 10th and 61st streets.
While bulldozers began stockpiling the sand at Stewart Beach Monday, trucks will start hauling it away on Wednesday. The project is under a tight deadline as it must be finished by March 31 to avoid disrupting the endangered Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle nesting season.
"We will suspend activities as far as placement of sand until such time the turtle nesting season is over which is October 1," Muller says.
