HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A winter storm over North Texas is expected to bring us widespread rain and gusty winds overnight before tapering off Friday morning. The heaviest rains and highest winds will occur along the coast near an area of low pressure tracking northeast toward Louisiana. A Gale Warning and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect overnight due to those strong winds.
Temperatures will hover in the upper 30s overnight and then only climb back into the mid 40s during Friday afternoon. The rain should clear out quickly Friday morning, but the clouds will linger behind. As a northwest wind kicks up and blows our way from the snow pack over North Texas, it will lead to very chilly air blowing in Friday night.
We do expect the freeze line to return to Southeast Texas Friday night. It will be a light freeze, so keep those cold weather precautions in place. We do not think there is much of a chance for any frozen precipitation because the moisture will be departing as the freeze line is arriving.
Saturday and Sunday will both bring cold mornings but milder afternoons. Saturday starts off with the light freeze then clears the 50 degree mark under a mostly sunny sky. Sunday morning could feature a coating of frost, but it now looks a weak weather disturbance will blow in to kick up the clouds and bring a 20% chance for showers. This could keep the low above frost territory, and the added clouds likely keep the high again in the 50s.
At this time we expect next week to be seasonable with no freezes for Houston. MLK Day weekend will feature a warm up into the 70s, but then a stronger cold front is expected to arrive, and that could bring back freezing temperatures after MLK Day.
