HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After a spell of mild and mostly dry weather through Saturday, a strong cold front will move in Sunday, and bring back a chance for thunderstorms, and much colder weather next week.
The weekend will start off partly cloudy and mild with afternoon high temperatures in the lower 70s Saturday, then mid 70s for Sunday! This warm up though is paired with the next weather system that will bring us scattered showers and storms for Sunday. Right now we have a 80% chance for storms on Sunday. We can't rule out a couple of strong to severe storms but it looks like an isolated risk. Also, the instability parameters look lower than what we experienced with last weekend's severe weather, so we are NOT expecting a repeat of last weekend. More than likely, it would be more of a straight line wind and hail threat. We'll keep a close eye on it for you.
Next week will feature the coldest temps so far this winter with lows in the 30s and highs in the 40s. Feels like temps Monday morning could fall to the upper teens for a short time. It's looking more likely that a good portion of SE Texas will drop below freezing sometime next week.
It's looking less likely that we will experience a hard freeze in southeast Texas. The latest data says the coldest air will move more east than south next week. A light freeze is likely to happen but a hard freeze looks less likely. As far as wintry precipitation goes, it now appears that the Arctic air over us will lose some of its cool before the rain makes it in here. Also, the latest data says the rain won't make it in until late Thursday. There will be a small window for something icy next Friday morning over our northern counties, but the window for that to happen is very small. We will continue to monitor things for you.
