WEATHER ALERT: A light freeze and patchy dense fog will keep the black ice issues going

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- We started off extremely cold Wednesday morning with lows in the teens and 20s. It won't be a hard freeze tonight, it'll be a light one. But temperatures in the upper 20s along with leftover moisture and freezing fog will keep the black ice issues going.

Why are we still dealing with black ice?

The sunshine we had all day Wednesday gave us high temps in the upper 40s. That wasn't enough to melt all the snow on area bridges and overpasses. Residual moisture from that as well as freezing fog will allow black ice to form once again overnight when temps fall below freezing. That will happen after about 10pm or so.

What is freezing fog?

Freezing fog occurs when fog forms with air temperatures below 32 degrees. In that situation, a tiny amount of black ice can form on bridges and overpasses causing driving issues. Additionally, since the fog is made of tiny ice crystals instead of tiny water droplets, the visibility may be even lower.

What can we expect this weekend?

With the return of humid Gulf air over the top of the cold ground, we will get widespread fog, clouds, and drizzle starting on Saturday. Temperatures will warm from the upper 30s to the 50s as a warm front lifts in Saturday afternoon. Don't be fooled by the low rain chance Saturday. There will likely be widespread mist coming down by Saturday afternoon and evening. Sunday will bring more widespread clouds, milder morning temperatures in the 50s, highs in the 60s, and an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Sunday represents the beginning of a wet weather period that will last through most of next week.
