Henry Martinez moves into role of Precinct 6 constable

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- With the roar of applause it became official -- Henry Martinez is now Constable of Precinct 6. The long-time lieutenant at Houston Community College Systems admits, the instant attention is a bit unexpected.

"I feel pretty nervous, Ms. Shay," Constable Martinez answered when this reporter asked him about his emotions. "It's a new position for me, a new role."

It is a new job that carries big responsibilities. Since the guilty plea of former Constable Victor Trevino, Harris County Commissioner Jack Mormon has tried to find a replacement who can relate to the overwhelmingly Hispanic population of the district, and also lives in the community. Still, Mormon has his detractors.

"You completely ignored us, acting like we don't exist, but you better start looking for another job," thundered W.R. Morris, a community activist who was unhappy with the choice.

But Commissioner Mormon brushed it off. "I quickly learned you're not going to make everybody happy, so I sort of stopped trying on that front."

Others who know Martinez says he has the experience for the job.

"He's lived in the precinct the majority of his life, has great credentials, great accolades from people we've talked to," said State Representative Carol Alvarado, (D) Houston.

Martinez leaves behind his HCCS police job for a constable job that will only last two years. He has pledged not to run for re-election. When pressed about that point, Martinez says he wants to focus on the law enforcement needs of businesses and residents -- not politics.

"As you can see, I'm not a political type of person. I'll do the job, do it well, to the best of my ability."
