Makeup and teens: Tips for achieving age-appropriate looks

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's one of the biggest arguments between moms and their teenage and tweenage daughters: age appropriate makeup! Well, now, there's a place right in Houston making that hot topic just a little bit easier.

Gabi is like many 13-year-old girls with a hobby. Hers happens to keep her outdoors and because of that, her skin suffers.

"I ride horses, and right here is the area of concern for me because the dirt gets clumped up and stuck," she explains.

Although her mom and dad tell her to follow a skincare regimen, sometimes advice coming from a third party works better.

That's where Me2 Beauty Bar comes in. The salon is just for 11- to 18 year-olds where experts, like makeup artist Kristin Ramazetti, teach girls about age-appropriate beauty.

"When it comes to teens and tweens, you definitely want to keep it sheer, light," says Ramazetti.

She starts by educating each girl about why taking care of her skin is cool.

"You have to take care of your skin no matter what," she said.

That means cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Gabi learns how much toning cleans her trouble spots, and then sees instant results after moisturizing.

Next, choose a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer and remember that a little bit goes a long way. Tweens and teens only need one layer of product. To determine the right shade, Ramazetti says, "Pick three shades that are closest to you and compare them to your neck because when you're wearing makeup you're blending down."

She continues, "If you're problem area is your chin, or for Gabby, it's her nose, get a concealer brush and go in like this, and you can build it."

Third, fill in your brows. Ramazetti recommends a palette with powder and wax for a softer look. First, brush the wax along the brows to shape them. Then, apply a brow color the same color as your root color.

"Just remember eyebrows are sisters, not twins, so it's okay if one brow is Walmart and the other's Gucci. It's okay," says Ramazetti.

Now, for the fun! Ramazetti recommends keeping makeup natural, and if you want to have some fun with your products, pick one statement area.

"Pop a lip or sparkle or maybe a colored eyeliner on the bottom."

Gabi decides on her statement area: "The area I want to enhance are my eyes."

So, neutral colors with shimmer on the eyelid is an age-appropriate way to be bold.

Then, add a blush color to the apples of the cheeks that shares the same color as your undertone.

"And you want to swirl it," Ramazetti recommends for the application.

Finish with a light gloss and mascara, and Gabi's got herself a new beauty routine!

"I loved the eye technique. I thought it was amazing, and I think I'm going to try it at home," Gabi says.
