A 15-year-old girl was swimming in the water off Long Beach, California during tryouts for a junior lifeguard program when she was attacked by a sea lion, officials said.
Rice University's swimming and diving teams challenged chief rivals for the conference title for years, only to fall short. On Monday, this year's team wore its championship hats thanks to the winning margin: .24 seconds.
A woman who lost a leg last year in a shark attack won a silver medal in the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.
"The 1st time I got back in (the water) was in July, a year ago," Ali Truwit said. "I got back in with a floaty around my stomach because we weren't sure how I was going to respond in the water again, and now I'm headed to the Paralympics."
"I've been dreaming about this moment forever, so just thinking about wearing red, white and blue and representing my country," swimmer Ahalya Lettenberger told ABC13.
