School districts announce closures, preparations underway as Tropical Depression 5 heads towards Southeast Texas
Multiple school districts across Southeast Texas announced on Monday that they would be closing schools on Tuesday ahead of Tropical Depression Five as it makes its way to the region.
The ABC13 Weather Team determined that Tuesday is an ABC13 Weather Alert Day due to the threat of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

Officials from the following school districts announced that campuses, offices, and school activities will be closed on Sept. 1 due to inclement weather:
- Dayton ISD
- Crosby ISD
- Galena Park ISD
- Channelview ISD
- Sheldon ISD
- Anahuac ISD
- Huffman ISD
- Humble ISD
There have been no announced closures for Wednesday, but officials from the school districts said they are monitoring weather conditions and will provide updates as needed.
The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) said on Monday that it is monitoring the tropical system. Officials said the potential impacts for Harris County may include "thunderstorms, hazardous travel conditions, and increased flood risk in areas with rivers, streams, and bayous".
HCOHSEM advised residents to remain weather aware and to ensure they have multiple ways to receive local emergency alerts. HCOHSEM officials said the public can stay informed by following HCOHSEM updates at ReadyHarris.org, on social media, and by signing up for ReadyHarris Alerts or ReadyHarris Accessible Alerts.
At the same time, CenterPoint Energy said on Monday morning that it activated its Emergency Operations Center ahead of Tropical Depression Five making landfall.
CenterPoint officials shared in a statement that they are "actively monitoring and preparing for potential impacts from Invest 97L to Southeast Texas, including Greater Houston, starting Tuesday. The system could bring several inches of heavy rainfall, localized flooding and the potential for gusty winds to the company’s service territory. CenterPoint’s workforce is prepared to respond to potential impacts to its electric and gas service, and the company continues to communicate and coordinate with local government officials ahead of this week’s forecast."
