The man heard a window break overnight and thought it was a burglary, HPD said.

HOUSTON., Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Police Department said its officers rescued a man from a house fire overnight in the Montrose area after he called about a burglary.
Officers said they received the 911 call from a resident in the 4100 block of Stanford Street at about 1:05 a.m. on Friday.
Investigators said that the man reported hearing glass breaking and thought someone was breaking into his house. Authorities said the man barricaded himself in an upstairs bathroom.
HPD said its officers were dispatched for the reported burglary in progress when they found that the second-floor balcony was on fire.
Officers said they kicked down the front door and made their way through the smoke. Authorities added that the officers were not wearing protective gear against the fire. They then broke down the bathroom door and led the resident out of the house to safety, officials said.
HPD said the Houston Fire Department also responded to the scene and put out the fire.
Investigators said they determined that there was no burglary. The fire reportedly started from a barbecue grill left on the patio, and the heat from the flames blew out the glass window, causing the loud noise.
Police said the man was the only person inside the home and that everyone is safe. They also said that the only damage from the fire was to the patio and the broken window.
