MONT BELVIEU, TX (KTRK) -- Barbers Hill High School has enjoyed success on the football field but with the arrival of a new head coach and athletic director, expectations are soaring to a new level.
Tom Westerberg is bringing his culture of wining big from the Allen Eagles. He led the Eagles to four state titles in eight years.
Westerberg and his wife grew up in Salado, Texas and the lure of returning to a smaller town makes him ready for the challenge.
"I was ready for something new, something else, we built it to where we had set the bar pretty high," Westerberg said. "I was ready for something different."
Barely three weeks on the job but Westerberg is already game planning. He's going over Allen game video with his new 'fired up' Barbers Hill players.
"The kids are excited, we have new changes in the off-season, lifting to fit how we play fast," he said. "We want to carry that on to the field."
A new coach and the brand new Lloyd Kelley Multipurpose Building on the Barbers Hill campus will have the Eagles ready. Westerberg knows first-hand that winning at a high level comes at a cost.
Westerberg says he message to his team was to have fun during their high school years.
"First thing I told them to have fun, this is the best time of your life," he added. "Remember to work, we're going to work but have fun doing it."
