Eyeshadow palettes put to the test

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- When shopping for eyeshadow, prices can run the gamut. But do you really need to shell out big bucks to find a high quality product?

The Naked Palette by Urban Decay is one of the most popular eyeshadow sets on the market, but it costs $54.

We wanted to know if similar, less expensive eyeshadow kits work just as well so we had professional makeup artist Darcie Teasley put them to the test.

For her, the most important factors are cost and long wear.

"Buying something that doesn't work well is throwing money away, you don't want to do that. You want to get something that's going to last look good while you're wearing," Teasley said.

My Nude Palette
$16 for 12 shades

We purchased the My Nude Palette online for $16. It looks very similar to the Naked Palette, but Teasley wasn't impressed.

"There's only one matte color in this palette, and it's not very strong at all," Teasley said.

L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche La Palette
$15.99 for 10 shades

Teasley moved on the neutral shades in L'Oreal's La Palette, which retails for about $15.99. In her opinion, it has good pigment, but is a little "powdery."

"That means a lot of talc and it tends to spray all over the face. You may have some cleanup," Teasley said.

Lorac Unzipped Palette
$42 for 10 shades

Lorac's neutral palette costs $42 and while the contour colors were a little better, Teasley is not convinced it is worth the investment.

"I can tell upon application that I can't see it," Teasley said of the color on the eyelid.

IT Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Palette
$42 for 14 shades

For the same price as the Lorac palette, Teasley says the IT Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Palette has visible contour between the colors and gives it a thumbs up.

Whether you choose to spend a lot or a little, Teasley says applying a good eye primer first will help your eyeshadow last a lot longer.
