HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Big changes could be coming to railroad crossings near you.
It's part of a nearly $1 billion safety project, which TxDOT has approved 12 railroad crossing projects across the state.
In our area, there are three in Fort Bend County, and one in Harris County.
Officials say they're still working out construction plans and timelines, but they will build some underpass or overpass for trains to use.
That being said, there is $756,000 coming from a federal grant. But much of the rest comes from a state law passed after Milby High School student Sergio Rodriguez died in 2024 while crossing a train track in east Houston.
While some safety measures, including a new sidewalk, have already been put in place at those tracks, a planned pedestrian bridge has not yet been completed.
