HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Two Spring ISD schools won't be reopening for the 2026-27 school year, the school district announced.
At its December board meeting, after several months of reviewing the District Optimization Plan, the Spring ISD Board of Trustees voted to close Link Elementary School and Dueitt Middle School starting next school year, according to Spring ISD.
Board President Justine Durant said the decision was part of a larger response plan and was made because the district lost over $13 million in federal funding, enrollment has declined, and the schools are running at about 60% capacity.
Spring ISD said Link Elementary students will be rezoned to either Lewis Elementary or Beneke Elementary.
The district also said Dueitt Middle School students will be rezoned to Bailey Middle School or a redesigned Bammel Middle School.
They added that a portion of the current Bammel and Bailey zones will be rezoned to Wells and Twin Creeks Middle Schools.
"We know this decision was incredibly difficult," said Spring ISD board trustee Winford Adams, Jr. "But ultimately, our responsibility is to do what is best for all 32,500 Spring ISD students."
