HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- On Nov. 4, three positions on HISD's school board will appear on your ballot, but they essentially hold no power - at least for now.
In 2023, the Texas Education Agency took over the district, removed the board of trustees, and installed an appointed board of managers to make policy decisions.
Now, the job of the trustees representing HISD's nine districts looks much different. On Thursday, the trustees that you elect are essentially liaisons between communities and the board of managers, but one day some of these trustees could be making district decisions again.
Right now, the takeover is set to end in June 2027. TEA commissioner Mike Morath has previously told ABC13, once the takeover ends, the board of managers will slowly be replaced with the elected trustees.
There are five trustee positions open this November. Two are unopposed and will not be seen on the ballot, but Houstonians will be able to vote for trustees in districts five, six, and seven.
Trustee positions are unpaid four-year terms.
