Pothole on freeway snarls traffic and flattens tires of 10 cars: HPD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A pothole on the East Freeway in Houston caused traffic problems Thursday night and damaged the tires of at least 10 cars, according to HPD.

Officers said there was a rock near a freeway joint in the pothole, but Houston TranStar called it road debris.

According to TxDOT, a joint in the road is an intentional gap in the concrete that helps reduce stress on the roadway.

Traffic backed up after HPD said they blocked three out of four lanes on the westbound East Freeway at Uvalde Road.

Officers said at least 10 cars ran over the hazard and got flat tires.

ABC13 reached out to TxDOT for more information, and they sent the following response:

"It appears there was a large pothole that was reported to us. We had crews sent to the area to fix, and we had the lanes back open a little after 10 p.m."
