Pomona Elementary third-grader dead after choking on food, Alvin ISD says

MANVEL, Texas (KTRK) -- A Pomona Elementary school third-grader has died after choking on food, according to Alvin ISD.

On Wednesday, Alvin ISD shared the following statement regarding the student's death.

"Today, our district is grieving deeply over the loss of one of our beloved students at Pomona Elementary. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with our student's family, and we stand by ready to offer care and assistance in any way possible.

The District's Crisis Response team has been at Pomona Elementary to provide support both to students and staff that are impacted by this exceedingly difficult loss. At this time, we graciously ask for the community's prayers, respect, and sensitivity for the student's family."

ABC13 learned that a teacher used the Heimlich Maneuver on the child who was choking, and both the school nurse and campus police officer got involved.

According to Alvin ISD, all staff members receive annual training on responding to choking incidents and other medical emergencies.

Also, according to the district, each Alvin ISD school has at least two airway clearance devices.

By state law passed last June, every public school in Texas is required to have one.

One was used in this case, officials say, but unfortunately, it wasn't able to dislodge the stuck food.

The child was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.
