ALVIN, Texas (KTRK) -- An Alvin man is in custody after an apparent car trade ended in an 18-year-old's death.

Police say Eric Olvera, 23, was taken into custody on Monday night and charged with murder. It came hours after police released his name and photo in connection with Thursday's fatal shooting.

Olvera's family told Eyewitness News he turned himself in.

Police say the victim, identified as 18-year-old Emad Siddiqui of Sugar Land, was shot at a gas station on Highway 35 Thursday night.

According to police, the shooting stemmed from a vehicle trade agreement between Olvera and Siddiqui.

A Siddiqui family friend said Siddiqui had gone with a friend to sell Olvera a car when Olvera pulled a gun and shot him.

Olvera's family claims he shot Siddiqui in self-defense.

Siddiqui's friend drove him from the scene while on the phone with 911 and eventually pulled over at Alvin Community College, where Siddiqui was found in the backseat with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Siddiqui's family said he was a freshman business major at the University of Houston who loved working with cars.

Olvera is being held without bond.
