Lightning strikes house, starting fire in NE Houston, HFD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities said lightning struck a house in northeast Houston on Saturday evening, causing the home to catch on fire.

According to the Houston Fire Department, firefighters responded to a house fire in the 13000 block of Slate Mountain Lane on Saturday. Officials said they determined that the fire was caused by a lightning strike.

This comes as Houston was impacted by widespread rain and storms on Saturday afternoon and evening.

HFD said firefighters were in defensive mode briefly due to the fire on the second floor of the building, but that they were soon able to put out the fire.

Officials said there were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

ABC13 spoke with neighbors who were home during the storm and the house fire nearby.

"It's one of those weird things that one in a million would happen where a thunderstorm would hit a house and create that level of fire," neighbor Maureen Sain said. "I'm really glad that our fire department, they're trained professionals...they were so quick. All the rain stopped it from spreading across our street."

"Storms like that are always frightening, but I'm just joyful that everyone was safe from it," Cody Sain said. "In the same way, I'm sorrowful they have to go through that because that could've been any of us."
