HPD arrests driver who fled after allegedly causing 7-vehicle crash in SE Houston on Thursday
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A driver accused of causing a multi-vehicle crash and then fleeing has been arrested, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Officials said the accident happened on Beamer Road at FM 2351 just before 7 a.m. Thursday.
SkyEye13 flew over the scene and spotted a gray car with the front end heavily damaged, surrounded by several emergency vehicles. At least six other cars were seen with heavy damage and spread across the roadways, the sheriff's office said.
ABC13 spoke with a teacher, Robert Lewis, who was on his way to work and was hit while waiting at a red light, leading to a chain reaction. At least one man was taken to the hospital after Lewis administered aid to him.
Sgt. Baldwin with HCSO said there was no sign of the at-fault driver using his brakes.
Officials said the suspect got out of his vehicle and fled into the wooded area as officers arrived at the scene. HCSO said that deputies and officers from the Houston Police Department set up a perimeter to search for the suspect, who was found around 9 a.m.
ABC13 was the only station there to watch the suspect being placed into custody. HCSO said the suspect did go to a gas station and tried to find a ride before police found him.
The sheriff's office said it is looking into the charges that may be filed against the suspect.
