HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Atascocita High School student Haleigh Hunt said she was a victim of theft while at school.
Hunt said she noticed something strange when she got in her truck after leaving school on Tuesday.
"As I was leaving school, I walked to my parking lot, and I turned on my truck, and it did not sound right," Hunt said.
"They went down, and they were checking out my truck, and I was at work getting a call from my mom," Hunt recalled. "I was like, 'Why is my mom calling me?' She was like, 'Oh, they stole your catalytic converter," and I was like, 'Oh my god,' and I started crying."
The Humble ISD Police Department confirmed with ABC13 that they are investigating the incident.
"Humble ISD police are currently reviewing video footage and investigating. There was one report of one vehicle affected," Humble ISD said in a statement to ABC13.
Hunt's mom, Trisha Johnson, said she is also in contact with Atascocita school leaders and their insurance company.
It's not long ago that catalytic converter theft was a major problem in the Houston area.
ABC13 reporting from 2022 shows that in March 2022, there were more than 1,200 incidents of catalytic converter theft.
There was a decline in catalytic converter thefts after that.
Hunt said that when she gets her car fixed, she plans to get a catalytic converter lock. The car part is an anti-theft device she hopes will help her avoid being a victim of theft again.
