1 dead, 5 injured in T-bone collision near downtown, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Police Department says it's still investigating the cause of a deadly T-bone collision near downtown.

The crash, which police say involved a Dodge Challenger and a Toyota Corolla, happened early Friday morning at Hutchins Street and Pierce Street.

"Both of these cars were approaching the intersection," HPD Sgt. Mike Barrow said. "All we know is those two cars collided in the middle of this intersection."

Barrow said it's unknown at this time who was at fault, in addition to whether speed or impairment played a role in the deadly crash.

Six people had to be hospitalized as a result of the wreck, according to police.

Five of them, including the male passenger who was pronounced dead at the hospital, were in the Corolla, according to Barrow.

He added that another person in that sedan is currently in critical condition.

"The others are being assessed for injuries," he added. "Everyone is an adult."

The driver of the Challenger is in the hospital with minor injuries, according to the sergeant.

HPD says it will be doing additional forensic analysis on both vehicles in an effort to determine who was at fault.
