'We're not done': Following a fire at a historic Rosenberg building, businesses vow to move forward

ROSENBERG, Texas (KTRK) -- After a fire ripped through a historic building in downtown Rosenberg, businesses are using their tears as motivation to move forward.

On Monday, Rosenberg firefighters said the historic Vogelsang Building on Avenue G in downtown Rosenberg caught fire. The fire marshal is investigating.

They believe the fire started in the roof or attic and was sparked by a mechanical issue. The building has been in the downtown area for 115 years.

For more than 35 of those years, the Cast Theatrical Company has been a tenant. "There's just so much quaintness, and closeness, and community in that building," Cast Theatrical Company committee member Lisa Jones Bevil explained.

A place the group fears may be lost for good. They watched as flames shot through the roof where their plays take place.

"When we first got here, there were flames shooting 30 or 40 feet, unfortunately on our end of the building, and they had three of those fire trucks putting the big hoses of water down through the roof," Cast Theatrical Company president John Bevil recalled.

The all-volunteer company lost not only its space, but lighting and other equipment. "We lost everything," Bevil said. "We had been saving for years to buy all this stuff. We were at a point where we were just about as good as we could get. We've lost all of that."

In order to come back, Bevil said they'll need help. The city is doing what it can. "We're going to try through our economic development department to see if we can relocate some of these folks and do everything we can to help them," Rosenberg Mayor William Benton said.

Benton isn't sure if the owner will rebuild. Assessments into the building's structure are still taking place.

A historic building Jones Bevil hopes will once again play host to more shows in the future. "It is stuff," Jones Bevil said. "The theater itself are the people. It's the community, and we're not done."
