6 students hospitalized after gas leak prompts elementary school to evacuate, HFD says

Gas leak reported in E. Houston, causing school to be evacuated: HFD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- At least six students from McReynolds Elementary School were hospitalized with heat-related illness after Houston fire officials said the school evacuated due to a nearby gas leak in east Houston.

According to the Houston Fire Department, crews were called at about 10:30 a.m. to a gas leak in the 5900 block of Market Street.

SkyEye was over the scene, and the video shows maintenance crews working on the site.

HFD said they estimate the kids who were evacuated were outside for more an hour. Six students were taken to Texas Children's Hospital with heat-related illness.

Houston ISD also sent the following statement regarding the school being evacuated:

The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. This morning, students and staff at McReynolds Middle School were evacuated as a precaution due to a suspected gas leak. The Houston Fire Department promptly investigated and confirmed that the building was safe to re-enter. Our campus was evacuated for approximately 1.5 hours. Instruction has resumed for the day, and all students will be provided lunch.
