LA PORTE, Texas (KTRK) -- An event honoring Texans who lost their lives in armed conflict is looking for volunteers to help a tribute to those who fought shine even brighter this weekend.

"Fields of Honor: A Luminous Tribute at San Jacinto" needs more than 700 volunteers to prepare, place, and pick up 21,500 candles across the San Jacinto battlefield.

According to the event, each luminary represents a Texan who gave their life in armed conflict.

Who can volunteer?

It's an event that's open to a variety of people. Organizers welcome military groups, scouts, ROTC students, families, community organizations, businesses, and individuals.

What roles need to be filled?

The event needs the following:

Group leaders: Guide and coordinate volunteer teams
Candle prep and placement: Assemble and place luminaries
Cleanup crew: Collect and dispose of luminaries after the event

When are volunteers needed?

Help is needed starting this Friday through Sunday.

Friday, Dec. 5, 2025 (8 a.m. - 2 p.m.): Prep Day (100-150 volunteers)
Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025 (7 a.m. - 4 p.m.): Candle Preparation & Placement (700+ volunteers across morning and afternoon shifts)
Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025 (7 a.m. - 12 noon): Cleanup Day (300+ volunteers)

The tribute open to the public is set for this Saturday at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site from 6 - 11 p.m.
