Coach's state win proves extra special with son on the roster

TOMBALL, Texas (KTRK) -- When Tomball High School won the state championship earlier this month, their 43-1-1 near-perfect season was a perfect ending for a father and his son.

"It means the world to me," sophomore Nolan Rush said. "It's every kid's dream to play with their dad, and I'm getting to live my dream."

Reporter: What does that medal mean to you?

Tomball Head Coach Doug Rush: This one means a lot because my sons are on this team, and we did it together.

Sophomore third baseman Nolan Rush and his dad, head coach Doug, shared an emotional moment after the game. "Most people dream about that kind of stuff, and they don't get to do it, but we've got to do it together," Coach Rush said.

It's sometimes interesting to see the relationship between a son and a dad when the dad is the coach, knowing there's pressure on both to win.

"He encourages me mostly off the field, son Nolan said. "On the field, he's ready to win, and so when I mess up, he's on me just like everybody else."

"You can't underestimate the pressure it puts on me and him," Coach Rush said. "It's been two years of a lot of pressure because when you write your own kid's name in the lineup, he's got to perform."

Well, Nolan has kept his end of the bargain. Going into the state game, he hit .404. In the state final game, he was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and he is thankful that his dad is there to guide him every day, on and off the field.

"He is the best father I could ask for and the best coach I could ask for," Nolan said.

"There are two different sides, and I've got to learn to know both of them, and so it's hard, but I enjoy it. I enjoy getting to spend time with him on and off the baseball field."

The father and son's memory together in a state final game dates back to when Nolan was 3 years old. Nolan is now 16. They made memories that will live with them forever.

"It'll be something he'll look back fondly on when he gets older and realizes what a blessing it was," Coach Rush said.
