Angleton teacher allegedly assaults student, family demands justice

ANGLETON, Texas (KTRK) -- An Angleton family is angry after they said a teacher assaulted a student at Heritage Junior High.

Angleton Independent School District said the teacher involved has since resigned. The mother and daughter, however, said they want more accountability.

"All I was thinking was that - he's going to kill me, that's all I could think," said 12-year-old student, Haélyn Nelay.

First, Nelay said the teacher squeezed her shoulders so hard she couldn't breathe.

"And he slammed me into the corner of a wall and the desk because the corner of the desk is right on the wall, and then he slammed me across the hallway into a wall, and he then proceeded to lift me off the ground to where my feet were dangling," said Nelay.

All of this after Nelay said she shoved the teacher's daughter.

Her mom, Annabell Suarez, said the two girls have been feuding throughout the school year, and her daughter takes accountability for her actions, but she said, regardless, she can't fathom why an adult touched her child.

Suarez said she viewed the video on Tuesday herself and is still in disbelief.

Angleton ISD said the teacher has since resigned, and they are cooperating with law enforcement and the TEA, but Suarez says that's not accountability for them.

"If the TEA did not put a stop to his certificate, he can go to any other district and be hired, he can go to another state and be hired, so they gave him the option to retire with full benefits, and he walked away from campus completely free. So I don't see how that's justice for my daughter," Suarez said.

Nealy is now hoping action will be taken swiftly and change will happen on campus.

"There needs to be more training because me, with all of that type of stuff, they failed me," said Nelay.

The Brazoria County District Attorney's Office confirms to ABC13 that it is investigating the incident.
