3-year-old road project on FM 2100 causing major backups and delays

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Huffman Fire Department and emergency personnel have said a major road project has caused major delays.

The road in question is FM 2100 from Huffman-Cleveland Road to FM 1960

Texas Department of Transportation officials said the project will convert FM 2100 from a two-lane to a four-lane divided roadway.Construction began back in Feburary 2022.

"All we want is to see it safe and we want to see it completed," Huffman resident Vernon Reed said. I don't think that's too much to ask for when you're talking about an organization as big as TX-Dot."

Officials said the construction confuses drivers and causes delays for fire trucks.

"With all the construction up here, there's basically two lanes, no shoulders. When you get further up north, it's almost like a drop-off," Assistant EMS Chief Cody Nance said. "The ditch is very deep, so there is literally nowhere for people to go."

"People don't leave an opening right here for trucks to get out," said Assistant Fire Chief Richard Austin. "We're stuck at their mercy."

The two assistant chiefs say multiple fire trucks have gotten into minor crashes, as drivers try to go around them or slide next to them.

TX-Dot officials point out, there are no obstructions that prevent emergency vehicles from moving around.

However, drivers said there isn't enough space.

"If you ask me what I would want to say to TX-Dot today, it's 'Get your crews out here, take care of the safety issues, and get this job finished.' There's no excuse why it shouldn't be," Reed said.

TX-Dot officials say construction is scheduled to finish up in the fall of 2026, but it all depends on weather and other conditions.
