Abandoned hotel that has been site of several fires will be demolished, Harris County officials say

CHANNELVIEW, TX (KTRK) -- An abandoned hotel that Harris County officials say is a "nuisance property" will be demolished Monday morning.

The property, off the East Freeway in Channelview, is home to the now-vacant Fairfield Inn & Suites.

Officials say the hotel has been vacant for nearly a year.

Last May, investigators said a fire was caused by someone using a torch-style lighter to set a fire inside the hotel.

In total, fire officials say they've responded to seven major fires since March last year.

This includes a fire last month, which destroyed most of the building.

Squatters, officials say, have caused multiple issues.

Harris County Pct. 2 says getting rid of the hotel is part of a $500,000 investment to "address dangerous properties and improve public safety."

The demolition is set to start around 10 a.m.
