3-year-old girl found wandering in west Harris County overnight, according to sheriff's office

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities said an investigation is underway after a 3-year-old toddler was found wandering alone overnight in west Harris County.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a call at about 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday in the 6600 block of Highway 6 near Schiller Road. The caller told deputies that she found the 3-year-old girl alone, officials said.

Investigators said they checked with local daycares and child drop-offs for anyone who could recognize the child. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office and the Houston Police Department were contacted as well for any missing child reports, HCSO said.

The Department of Child Protective Services took custody of the toddler, according to authorities.

HCSO said its Child Abuse Unit is leading the investigation.
