KATY, Texas (KTRK) -- New details have emerged in a car crash that left a man dead in the Katy area on Tuesday.
According to court documents, 20-year-old Dejon Fortune is now charged with intoxication manslaughter in a crash that killed 53-year-old Sung Bae on Westheimer Parkway near Cinco Ranch Boulevard. Fortune was driving a BMW X5 with two passengers inside the car, and hit Bae in his Cadillac XT4 at around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, court documents stated.
Before the fatal crash, court documents stated that Fortune had celebrated his 20th birthday party at a friend's house near Tompkins High School at 8 p.m., and then went to a Taco Bell on Westheimer Parkway.
A witness told deputies that Fortune was driving between 70 and 80 miles per hour when he crashed into Bae's vehicle. Documents added that the collision sent Bae's Cadillac off the roadway and into a light pole and trees. Bae was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Court documents also stated that Fortune initially denied driving the BMW, but later told deputies he had been drinking. Documents added that Fortune showed signs of intoxication, and that he did not remember when he had his last drink.
One of the passengers inside Fortune's BMW informed deputies that she and the other passenger removed alcoholic beverages from the vehicle after the crash, documents stated.
