The shutdown caused a major traffic nightmare getting into town from the Pearland area.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Avian Foster, 27, has been charged with intoxication assault after police say she drove the wrong way down Highway 288 and hit three officers.

Two officers were released from the hospital with minor injuries. Another officer remains at Memorial Hermann Hospital, recovering after surgery for a broken leg.

And that wasn't the only wreck on Highway 288 this morning.

Just after 2am, a woman was killed when her car flipped on the northbound lanes and rolled towards the bayou. The driver was taken to the hospital. It's not clear at this point what led to that accident.

Then around 3:45am, while Eyewitness News was on the scene, as police say Foster came down the northbound lanes and plowed into a squad car near where a group of officers was working the scene.

"We do put a double barrier behind the accident," explained HPD Chief Charles McClelland. "But really it's hard to prepare or assume that somebody is going to be driving the wrong way on the freeway. It's just an unexpected event even though we know it happens."

Foster has no prior arrests.
