HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A son was killed overnight trying to protect his mother during a robbery in southwest Houston.

Police say the victim,James Weldon Ecford, 25, and his mom pulled into the parking lot at the Condominiums on the Green on Sands Point Drive around 11pm.

The son went inside only to hear his mother fighting with a man who tried to take her purse.

Their neighbor tells us that the attack happened right outside her door.

Houston Police say a man walked up to the victim's mother and tried to grab her purse. That's when her son came out and tried to protect her.

HPD Sgt. Thomas Simmons said, "He heard his mother screaming and he came outside and confronted the suspect. There was a struggle and the suspect shot him."

The neighbors said they heard at least two gunshots and all of this happening in front of the victim's mother.
