Person shot in head, another pistol whipped in Midtown attempted robbery
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A gunman pistol whipped a sandwich store manager and then shot a witness who was yelling "Call police!" around 7am Monday in Midtown. The man was waiting outside the Jimmy John's on Bagby St. when Cameron Breunig, 27, showed up to open the store.
"He came up after I unlocked the door and tried to force me inside," Breunig explained. "The alarm was going off. He couldn't do anything in the store if I didn't turn off the alarm. So that's why I didn't go in."
Breunig was beaten in the head and lost his shoe in the struggle. He managed to run away, but then the would-be robber deliberately shot a homeless man who was in the crosswalk at Brazos and McGowen. The man was shot in the head and had been yelling for help before he was shot. He stumbled over to the Walgreens, which is across the intersection from the Jimmy John's shopping center, and collapsed outside.
"I saw him shooting his gun but I couldn't see what he was shooting at. My glasses got knocked off so I couldn't see anything," Breunig explained.
Breunig managed to run away. The shooting victim was taken to a hospital and said to be stable.
Police were reviewing security cameras in the neighborhood. Breunig said he didn't get a good look at the suspect, but said he was wearing sunglasses and a hood.
