Firefighters: Water access slowed response at three-alarm fire
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Firefighters battling a three-alarm apartment blaze say they had a tough time getting access to water.
The fire broke out around 9pm Wednesday at The Providence Apartments on FM 1960 near Wunderlich Drive, in northwest Houston.
The Champions Fire Department arrived to find fire and smoke coming from the second floor of the building. A second and then third alarm were pulled for help.
Firefighters say the apartment's hydrants are located outside the complex, which may be why the fire grew in size.
Two people had to be taken to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. Meantime, 14 units were badly damaged by fire, smoke and water.
The Red Cross is assisting residents left homeless by the blaze.
Some told Eyewitness News they are upset about the issue of water access in the case of this emergency.
