IRVING, TX (KTRK) -- Social media exploded when police handcuffed a 14-year old boy in Irving, Texas after he brought an experiment to class.
Ahmed Mohamed said he built a digital clock on his own and wanted to show it off to his teachers. The situation escalated when a teacher feared the device was a bomb.
Police showed up, pulled Mohamed out of class, and detained him. The teenager said the situation proved frightening.
"I told her it was me that made that noise. It was my alarm clock." said Mohamed. "She told me it looks like a bomb and I'll take it from you here. I was like why are you taking it? She said I don't want you going around with that."
Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd stood by the decision to investigate Mohamed's device. He said the student wasn't "forthcoming with information" when police questioned him. Boyd said in today's world, you never can be too safe.
"Obviously, we will review this as we do any other high profile nature," said Boyd. "It evolved as it did in the matter of safety and the abundance of caution under the circumstances."
President Barack Obama weighed in on the debate. He tweeted out, "Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great."
Mohamed said he'll take President Obama up on his offer and wants to transfer to a new school. Police said Mohamed will not be charged in this case.
Mohamed is scheduled to appear this morning on Good Morning America. You can watch the program right here on abc13 from 7am to 9am.
