Moses Malone funeral: Tribute to former Rockets great, Hall of Famer
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The life of basketball Hall of Famer Moses Malone was remembered at a funeral service today in Houston.
Malone, a three-time NBA MVP, died Sunday at age 60.
The funeral was held at Houston megachurch Lakewood. The church is in the same building where the Houston Rockets played during Malone's time with the team from 1976-1982 when it was called The Summit.
Among those who spoke at the funeral, former NBA star Charles Barkley eulogized Malone, saying the star took him under his wing and helped him lose weight. In fact, Barkley said he made a mistake moving into the same apartment building as Malone.
Barkley recalled, "We did have a couple little altercations. ... A few times I ordered pizza and the next thing I know someone is knocking on my door and Big Mo said, 'You got pizza in here.' I was like, 'How you know I got pizza in here?' He says, 'Charles, you can't lose weight eating pizza. That type of leadership, stand on my case, at the time it was a struggle, but man, I cannot believe how lucky I am to number one, have a father figure on my team, but also living in my same building...to keep me moving forward. I always thanked him for that."
