Best and worst times to hit the road this Memorial Day weekend

If you are making plans to hit the road this Memorial Day Holiday, you've got a lot of company.

AAA released peak travel times for some of the busiest freeways in Houston.

Heading to or from Galveston? You'll want to avoid Sunday at 2:15 p.m., if you drive the Gulf Freeway. Normal drive times are expected to double around that hour.

If you drive the Southwest Freeway, avoid Friday between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Travel times are expected to increase by almost 50 percent.

If you're heading out West on the Katy Freeway, perhaps for an Austin or San Antonio road trip, Thursday between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. is expected to see heavy traffic with speeds only about 23 miles per hour.

No matter which day you travel, the earlier you start your trip, the faster the drive.
