2 Alvin ISD schools damaged by severe weather will not reopen this school year, district confirms

Alvin ISD has just announced that two of its elementary schools that were damaged during overnight storms will not reopen this school year.

Initially, the district said Wilder Elementary School and Mary Marek Elementary School would be closed on Wednesday due to the damage, and classes would resume on Thursday. In an update, however, Alvin ISD said the schools would be closed for the last few days of the school year.

The students' last day was supposed to be Friday.

The district superintendent, Carol Nelson, told ABC13 that the cafeteria, gym, and library at Mary Marek were "totally covered in water."

Nelson said there was also damage to some classrooms, the cafeteria and gym, and hallways at Wilder.

"We feel like there may have been some damage, then with these widespread showers and rain coming through, that now the roof has been penetrated," Nelson said, adding that they were looking into getting repairs and estimates on each of the schools.

"Friday is the last day, so kids are disappointed because it's awards and things of that nature, and so we understand that, but again, we want to make sure our students and staff are safe," the superintendent added. "You know, sometimes we can't control Mother Nature and what happens, but the schools will be in contact with the parents and hopefully we can come up with a solution where we can still celebrate them some how some way and get them their awards."
