Grandparents classes offered at Kingwood Medical Center
KINGWOOD, TX (KTRK) -- First-time grandma Cheryl Austin recently enrolled in a grand-parenting class at Kingwood Medical Center's Women and Children's Services Center in Kingwood, Texas.
"The grand parenting class just sounded like a fun thing to do," said Cheryl. "I knew certain things had changed since I had my own children - such as doctors saying babies shouldn't be sleeping on their tummies anymore." At her first class, before revealing the latest infant-feeding techniques, Cheryl's instructor offered a tip for maintaining good relations with the new parents. "We were told to hold off on offering unsolicited advice," says Cheryl.
Grand parenting classes do cover more than the new role expecting grandparents are stepping into. The class outlines include all that's changed in child safety and childcare practices. Some even include lessons in infant CPR. "Tips on caring for infants may be delivered best by a health professional or educator," says Sue Schlesser, who spearheaded Cheryl Austin's class. "Unnecessary disagreements may arise with a difference of opinions on care."
