How many homeless people does Houston have?

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The 2015 homeless count is happening tonight, and more than 500 volunteers will be spread out from Harris County to Fort Bend County to see how many people are living on the streets.

The Coalition for Homeless is holding the count. The CEO says since 2011, the number of homeless people have been steadily going down and that the majority of homeless people on the streets are single men and veterans.

"The number of homeless has dropped 37 percent, which tells us our housing program -- taking that chronic individual that's been on the street for a lot of years and getting them into housing and then wrapping around the supportive services to help them stabilize that -- is working," said Marilyn Brown, CEO of the Coalition for the Homeless.

The group expects to have data back before midnight and will have preliminary numbers in mid-February.
