Rustic chandeliers are pretty, but they can also cost a pretty penny. But you can DIY this mason jar chandelier for under $75!

There are a million ways to use mason jars in home decor, but did you ever think to make a light fixture with them? These babies are inexpensive and with a little electrical work can become one fabulous chandelier!

You'll need:

a dozen mason jars with lids

pine or medium-density fiberboard (MDF)

drill

paint

keyless sockets - 1 dozen

lamp cord

wire cutters

lightbulbs that fit the sockets and will fit inside the mason jars

1. Gather all of yours supplies. You can find mason jars for sale by the dozen at the grocery store really inexpensively. The rest of the items you'll need are found in the electrical department of the hardware store.

2. Decide on the size of the ceiling plate (what the lights and wires will attach to) and cut down inexpensive pine or MDF. Figure out the placement of the lights and wires and drill holes in the appropriate places. Add small pieces of MDF or pine to the sides of your ceiling plate to create a shallow box that will attach to the ceiling. Paint the ceiling plate box your desired color- we liked the look of metal, so we went with an oil-rubbed bronze.

3. Cut the lamp wire to the appropriate length for each mason jar.. We varied the lengths to add interest and also so that the jars didn't clank against each other when hanging. The wire wasn't the right color for us, so we spray painted them black to match.

4. Drill a hole in the middle of each lid of each mason jar, and two smaller holes on either side of the middle hole so that the jars don't overheat. You can choose to keep the lids their regular metallic color, or spray paint them like we did.

5. Attach one end of the lamp wire to a keyless socket, screw in the light bulb, and slide the lid on the top so that it fits against the socket.

6. String the lamp wire through the holes in the ceiling plate and tie into a knot. Strip the ends of each lamp wire cord. Attach all of the wires to a wire nut and then screw the box into the ceiling. Attach the mason jars to their lids and you're done!

Note: You should consult with an electrician to have the light fixture installed properly.

You could choose to spend hundreds of dollars on a custom chandelier, or you could make one for under $100 that has major wow factor! Not too shabby!
