LIBERTY, TX -- Homeowner Susan Simmons and Liberty County Historical Commission Chairperson Linda Jamison welcomed guests Saturday, Nov. 29, to a ceremony dedicating a Texas Historical Commission marker recognizing the Judge Walter S. Neel Home on North Main Street in Dayton, Texas, as a historical landmark.

Neel was instrumental in the founding of the City of Dayton and served as the town's first mayor. His four bedroom home on Main Street was built in 1917 for a cost of only $2,500.

Simmons gave a brief history of Judge Neel and his house during the dedication, saying that Neel was a licensed Presbyterian minister, sold insurance for the Pacific Mutual company, and published a newspaper called The Hendrick Leader in Oklahoma before moving to Dayton.
