Cops: Driver was following GPS in crash off bridge that killed wife

EAST CHICAGO, IN -- Police say a driver apparently was following GPS navigation when he drove off the ramp to a demolished bridge that had been closed since 2009, killing his wife.

The 51-year-old woman was killed and her husband injured when their car went off the edge of an old, unused bridge in East Chicago, Indiana.

Police are trying to figure out how the vehicle managed to get several barriers at the Cline Avenue Bridge Saturday morning.

The passenger in the 2014 Nissan Sentra, Zohra Hussain, died in the crash. Her husband, Iftikhar Hussain, 64, was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake in stable condition.

The bridge has been out of service since 2009 and police say the car had to get past several barricades, including orange barrels and cones and large wood signs stating "Road Closed," to go over the edge of the bridge.

Construction of a new bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal is scheduled to begin this spring.
